In the darkness……. Let light shine!!
It’s not a coincidence that on the shortest day, traditionally humans have done something to try and bring light into our lives.
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year” “tis the season to be jolly” are just some of the song lyrics we hear on repeat during December (and even November). But for so many people, Christmas is not the time of year we are all told it should be.
For people in recovery, it can be a time full of triggers, of anxiety and even darkness.
And it is dark. In the Northern Hemisphere, Christmas day falls near the shortest day of the year. At this time, many of us don’t feel at our most abundant or joyous. Even without all of the potential Christmas stressors. The lack of light can make us feel low in energy and low in mood. We want to slow down and hide away. These feelings are all natural.
This natural slowing however does lend itself to something; Introspection. It is normal to look inward and reflect. We look back over the year, to the highs and lows, the light and the dark.
It’s not a coincidence that on the shortest day, traditionally humans have done something to try and bring light into our lives. Be it to light candles, sparkle up the Christmas tree and turn on the fairy lights, or spend time with those who love us and understand us.
So I ask you…..upon reflection….. What brings you light in the darkest of times? And looking forward to the New Year approaching….. How do you want your brighter future to look?
It’s ok to sit with your darkness for a while…….and then when the time is right……shine your light.
